Wearing a helmet while skateboarding isn't necessarily cool ... but sometimes helmets can save your life! Do you have a skateboarding story about how a helmet kept your brains intact? Share your story here! Share Your Story

Last Sunday

I was longboarding with a buddy sunday and went down a hill I knew was sketchy. Long story short I fell and took a lot of road rash and facial damage but I'm still alive thanks to my handy dandy helmet which now has five huge gashes down the left side. Will I keep skating totally, and I will always wear my helmet because I'm sure it saved my life.

Wear a Helmet!

My nephew was Brenda's son. The one who died after hitting a speedbump while on his skateboard. I know someone else who hit his head in June and is still recovering in the hospital. To see his progress, go to aronshubin.com

Wear A helmet

I lost my son from a skateboard accident. He went over a speedbump, fell off the skateboard hitting the back of his head and never came out of it. He was only 29.

There IS a reason to wear helmets.

One time i was dropping in and i wasn't paying attention, so I basically manualed down the ramp and slammed my head in the wall but luckily the park requried that you where helmets so i was safe.

Slid

One time when i was riding around with my friend as just a casual ride around town, we were going down a slight hill, nothing to steep (even for a beginner). We riding down the sidewalk (which i thought was safe enough) and on one of the squares there was a 4 inch high crack sticking up. I was going so fast, I flipped off my board, and slid 14 1/2 feet down the hill ON MY HEAD! If I wasn't wearing a helmet......

Wouldn't be sitting here...

...if it weren't for my helmet. When I was much younger, and the razor scooter craze was just starting up, the neighborhood kids and I were launching ourselves off some homemade launch ramps. I don't remember it actually happening, but I ended up faceplanting from a few feet in the air. I was OUT, and didn't completely regain consciousness until I was in the emergency room. My mom ended up taking me to my house before taking me to the hospital, and the trail of blood on the asphalt remained for months after. I ended up with 4 lost teeth, a broken nose, and a pretty bad concussion. Oh yeah, and I WAS WEARING A HELMET. Doctors said if I hadn't, I wouldn't have been so lucky. Head injuries due to skateboarding (and similar activities) are rare compared to say, a wrist or a leg injury. But the difference is that broken bones heal, and the damage done to your brain is permanent. The risk just isn't worth it. Wear a helmet.

Bloddy day

Me and my friends had just started skating(3 months) and my friend's little brother was skating with us. (hes 8) when he tried to Ollie a 6 inch curb. (it was his 5th day) He did it too late and his board came flying up and whacked his head. (I was the only one that saw it) He gave a small shriek and grabbed his face(he wasn't wearing a helmet. I then yelled at his sister, "Emma your brother's board just whacked him in the head!" Every one that was there ran over to me and him. He took his hand off his face and blood was every where. He yelled and started running(to his house 1 block away). blood was running down his face and falling every where. His sister ran with him. I went and got his best friend's dad(who is a doctor) he ran down to their house with me and my friend. when we got their we could hear him screaming. They called 911. the ambulance picked him up and rushed him to the E.R. That night I received a phone call from his sister. Henry was alive. We all wear helmets now.

fell from a 16 stair high quatre pipe

I didnt have a helmet on and i thought i could roll into the 16 stair high quatre pipe so i could try a disaster. i tried it slow and my truck got caught on the coping. i fell from the the 16 stair high quatrepipe straight to flat ground doing a half samasault. I hit the back of my head first and then the elbows flinged to the ground and i was knocked out for 5 seconds. When i got up i was leaping everywhere to get the pain loosened. and i didnt have a helmet. and i survived!!!

use helmets

so one time at my local skatepark, just a normal day wasnt tryin anything new, my friend kept telling me to take off the helmet since it was 90 degrees out.i didnt luckily and when i started skating a easy halfpipe i try a axle stall (something i could already easily do.) i hit a bolt and instead of sliding down the ramp i launch my self up and fall 4 feet head first. I go to the hospital and find out that i had almost cracked my skull open, without my helmet the doctors said i should have been dead (i did though bleed a lot ruinning the ramp for a week and i broke my leg)

protech ftw!

i was skating at a skatepark near where i live. some guys were rolling in from a space trying to get speed. I saw a huge hill that led into the skatepark. i was pretty comfertable doing it so i tried for more speed. i went down and when i was on the concrete, there was this little ramp. my board turned sideways and i hit my head on the ground (i did a barrell roll) THANK GOD FOR MY HELMET!

Broken Brain

I have been skateboarding for about a month and a half now and am pretty good with the balance on my board. I tried to drop in on a ramp that goes down into a steep ramp like thing. I dropped in perfectly. When the ramp came, my front wheels got caught under the ramp. This was the last thing paved in the park so it is very sketchy. I spun out, bruised my side and smacked my head on the pavement. Without that helmet, my brain would still be on the ground.
