Red Dragons Ride Again!

By , About.com Guide

Skateboard Party is a collection of skate footage from the 2004 Red Dragons (RDS) skate tour, plus extra. Skateboard Party is the second skateboarding video from RDS. The first video, titled "Red Dragon", was a mix of skateboarding clips and wild party scenes featuring a monstrous number of famous pro skaters and other people. Skateboard Party has some of the same feel and fun, but follows the path of the usual skateboarding videos in having segments featuring team riders.

Skateboard Party - Raw Skate Action

Skateboard Party features the skateboarding talents of:
  • Mike Hastie
  • Ryan Oughton
  • Colin McKay
  • Rob "Sluggo" Boyce
  • Moses Itkonen
  • Paul Machnau
  • Gailea Momolu
  • Russ Milligan
  • Ryan Smith
  • Caine Gayle
  • Danny Way
  • Arron Johnson
  • Paul Trep
  • Sean Hayes
  • Glenn Suggitt
  • Jason Ellis
  • Rob Dyrdek
  • Tony Hawk
  • Bucky Lasek
  • Sheldon Meleshinski
  • Mike Chalmers
  • Gordie
Plus a drunk Tom Green, and I swear it's Andy Macdonald dressed up like a large woman ...

Some of my favorite parts: Mike Hastie - this guy is talented! He makes huge jumps and lands relaxed and low. Rob "Sluggo" Boyce is a straight up acrobat, spinning everything, with or without his board! And Arron Johnson - this guy wipes out like nobody, and keeps going strong. Seriously, the skateboarding in the Red Dragons Skateboard Party DVD is hot, and doesn't get old. These guys are pulling of long complicated lines. And as a plus, it's not all street - you get some nice vert action mixed in as well.

Skateboard Party - Havin' Fun in the Great White North

And following the theme of the video, Skateboard Party by RDS is full of fun and funny parts other than skateboarding. The video starts out with a drunk Tom Green breaking out of a closet (?!), and the team hacking down a stubborn tree to burn in celebration of the end of the 2004 RDS tour. All through Skateboard Party, you get to see the Red Dragons having fun. Jason Ellis catches a shark and eats it's heart. They throw paint onto a guy's back who was giving them a hard time (the dude doesn't realize it, and goes back and sits in his car...). Ryan Gallant looks tired and wasted as he passes out stickers to defenseless skaters. Gallant looked pretty roughed up though most of the movie!

Red Dragons Skateboard Party - Stuff I Didn't Like

I only have two complaints about Red Dragons Skateboard Party - I got tired of some of the music, and it's too short.

For the music - during the section featuring clips of Tony Hawk, Colin McKay, Jason Ellis and Bucky Lasek, the music sucked! To be fair, I'm not a big fan of rap, and the Red Dragons can't get enough of it.

But the music is a minor complaint - my other problem was with the length. The whole DVD is only 32 minuets long. Of course, if I wish it were longer, then that means I liked it and didn't want it to end. Sometimes, I can't WAIT for a skate video to finally die. With Skateboard Party, I really enjoyed it, and was frustrated that there wasn't more.

Skateboard Party DVD - Special Features

There's a feature called "Carcus Huck", where you see guys eat concrete. It's harsh, and fun to watch! There's also a bonus feature called "Parks and Demos", with bits from their tour to local skate parks, the Dragons getting harassed, and you see them toss a skateboard to a pack of ravenous boys, who proceed to kill each other over it. Good clean fun. The back of the DVD case lists these bonus extras and says, "And much much more..." Nope, there's isn't any more. That's it.

Skateboard Party RDS Video - Parental Advisory

The Skateboard Party DVD is a good, quality skateboarding video. I enjoyed it. It's a bit rough, in that the music is chuck full of cussing - for that matter, so are the skaters! There's blood, anger, drinking, women - in short, all the stuff you get in most skateboarding videos. Skateboard Party has a Parental Advisory on the cover, for "Choice Content" - on the back of the box it reads, "Warning: Contains Graphic Scenes, Language, Alcohol, Some FSU." I'm not sure what FSU is, but the video does have all the rest. If you are looking for a skate video for your kid and you want to keep it clean, look elsewhere. Otherwise, Skateboard Party doesn't really have any more of all of this stuff than any other skateboarding video out there - they just let you know up front that it's there. Which is good of them, I think!

Red Dragons Skateboard Party Film - The Final Word

So what's the final word? Skateboard Party is a good skate video - it's fresh, new, innovative and fun to watch. It'll make you want to go to Canada. If you are OK with violence and cussing, want to find out what FSU is, and want to watch a bunch of guys have a lot of fun and rip up the concrete, get the Red Dragons Skateboard Party DVD.
