And you’ll notice that there are some girl’s names listed. The Public Domain DVD features a section on girls skating, showing their technical skill and ability on a half pipe. Sofie talks about how there are plenty of girl skaters, and that it’s not that they can’t skate, it’s that they simply skate differently than guys.
Another huge bonus to this video are the short interviews with Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, Mike McGill and others about what drives them, and why they skate. With the video’s schizophrenic approach to assaulting your senses with what seem like random images, Public Domain manages to paint a more complete picture of the lives of the Bones Brigade team. Watch their parents talk about them. Watch Mountain fight with a skateboarding dog for his board. Watch kids getting tickets from a skate cop for weak ollies (and a clip of Allan “Ollie” Gelfand performing the first ollie in competition). Watch Daniel Gezmer “glide” gracefully before a rainbow banner. Watch a demonic clown laugh manically.
The only drawback to this DVD is the lack of anything extra to push it over the top. However, I think that most people who will want this will be overjoyed that it is simply available on DVD. If you are an old school skater, you’ll want to add this to your collection for sure. If you are a newer skater, I would definitely recommend seeing Public Domain – one, for the history of it, and two, to see how these huge names in skateboarding today were when they were young.
Make sure to check out the reviews of the other Bones Brigade DVDs (Video Show, Future Primitive, The Search for Animal Chin, and Basic Training Plus). The soundtrack to the Bones Brigade movies is also available.
