The railstand can be performed toe side or heel side (also sometimes called frontside and backside). When doing a toeside railstand, the griptape will end up facing in front of you. When doing a heelside railstand, the griptape will end up facing behind you.

Toeside Railstand

First, I'm going to walk you through doing a toeside railstand, since it's a little easier. Find a flat surface, like your driveway, the street, your garage or living room, and strand on your skateboard. Put one foot over each truck (right on top of the bolts).

Now, you want to push on your toes and jump up, pushing the skateboard up onto its side while you are in the air. Then, simply land softly on the edge of the skateboard. You want your feet to land so that you are standing on both the side of the skateboard and the wheels.
