Burton Approach Snowskate Review

Burton Approach 2

The Bottom Line

The Burton Approach Snowskate is very different from the other Burton Snowdecks. It's a simple skate - one piece plastic board that's shaped to give a simple, comfortable, intuitive ride. The Burton Approach Snowskate isn't made for bombing huge hills, but more for backyard fun. And it does a good job with that, being perfect for small tricks, banks, and even half pipes if you take the time to get good. There are a few drawbacks, but overall the Burton Approach is a good, solid snowskate.

Pros

  • Instant fun without any setup or special gear - not even wax.
  • Perfect size for most skaters, with a concave shape and side ledges for more control.
  • A great way to get your skateboarding fix of season.

Cons

  • Foam grip area gets coated with ice too quickly.
  • If you fall while on a hill, the board will likely fly down the hill without you. So don't do it.
  • If you only have one of these, your friends will want to use it so much that you won't get a chance!

Description

  • Base combines an elliptical rocker, solid sidecut, and an overhanging ledge
  • Ledge provides on-edge turning capabilities to link multiple tricks and a place to for grabbing
  • Foam grip area provides good traction to shoes and boots, but collects ice

Guide Review - Burton Approach Snowskate Review

The Burton Approach Snowskate is straight forward. You pull it out of the box and play. There's nothing to adjust, no moving parts, and if you've ever skateboarded or snowboarded before, you instantly know what to do with it.

We had a lot of fun trying the Burton Approach Snowskate out. It takes a minuet at first to get comfortable - it rides nothing like the other Burton Snowdecks. The Approach is more comfortable and more simple. I got the hang of it fairly quick, as did Dan, a tester who snowboards. Michael, a tester who skates, started out by asking me to tell the world, "it sucks." But after only about half an hour of play he loved it. No one got to hit any rails, but Dan was riding like a pro by the end of the day, mostly hitting big hills. Hills that the instructions say not to ride on, but that are tons of fun. Only once did the board get away from someone, and it was too funny to complain about.

The only real problem I had with the Burton Approach snowskate was the grip area. It's covered in foam, and ice freezes to it way too easily. Wether you have boots or water resistant skate shoes on, ice gets packed down and frozen on, which makes the board hard to ride. The bottom of the board never got ice frozen to it though, and didn't need wax. That was a huge bonus.

All in all the Burton Approach snowskate is a ton of fun. It's definitely a toy, but a very fun toy that you can share without worry. I definitely recommend it.
