Dickies Clothes for Skateboarding Review

About.com Rating 4.5

Dickies are perfect for the punk scene, with Dickies’ industrial look and strong designs. But Dickies provides more than just a tough image – what works for labor works for skateboarding. I reviewed some pants, jeans, jackets and shorts that the Dickies website lists as being perfect for skateboarding, and am happy with what I found. With features like double layered knees, strong stitching and strong materials, Dickies are a perfect choice for ripping it up on your skateboard.

Two-Tone Cargo Work Shorts

My favorite is the Two-Tone Cargo Work Shorts. First off, these shorts look good. There’s no way to pretend that that part isn’t important! They come in solid colors, but have a small area in the pleat of the side cargo pockets that shows another color. The pockets are good sized, with Velcro flaps, and hang well so that your skate tool doesn’t look funny.

But these shorts are also great for skateboarding. I went skating several times in them, and they not only did they handle me wiping out without tearing (and I wipe out a lot), but they were comfortable and didn’t reek after I was finished. There’s just no polite way to bring that up, is there? But anyone who skates much knows that your shorts or pants get to smelling pretty strong after skating, and these shorts didn’t. Not that they smelled great or anything, but I didn’t feel weird going over and hanging out with non-skater friends after skateboarding, without changing. In all, I’d say I don’t have better shorts to skate in now than these Two-Tone Cargo Work Shorts from Dickies.

Workhorse Jeans

Sometimes though, you don’t want to wear shorts while skateboarding. Some people always wear pants, and I understand that completely. I also tried out the Workhorse Jeans. These jeans have double reinforced knees, which are perfect for skateboarding (or tackling your friends).

The Dickies Workhorse jeans also feature a cell phone (or skate tool) pocket, and are cut to fit over boots. I liked these jeans enough, but they felt a little heavy for my skateboarding tastes. However, if you like wearing jeans while skateboarding, I can’t think or a better feature than double layered knees... Except for more reinforcement on the inseam, and these jeans seem pretty tough. If you skate like I do, then you know that the inseam of your jeans is often one of the first things to go. These Dickies Workhorse Jeans are made for rough work, so they should last a good long time on the skate park. And if they don't, well you have the Dickies Guarantee! (see page two for more on the guarantee)

Double Knee Work Pants

A better choice for me for pants was the Dickies Double Knee Work Pants. Now these bad boys are perfect. Light and tough, these are the kind of pants I like.
They look a little like dress pants, which is both good and bad. Good, because you can wear them to work or church and still skate in them, but bad because you may feel weird scuffing them up at the skate park. But on the other hand, it will take a little while to rip through these pants. Like I said, they have a double knee, which is great for the same reasons as on the jeans, and they have a “Multi Use Pocket”, which again you could use for your cell phone, skate tool, or whatever you want. These Double Knee Work Pants are also stain resistant, which is perfect for buying value – when you don’t want to buy separate pants to work or play in, these Dickies Double Knee Work Pants are perfect.
