These are some cool apps, from games to learning to skate to just goofing around. Touchgrind is something like a fingerboarding skateboard game. The controls are all flick and tap based, and you get to customize your board and skate around a small skatepark. Touchgrind has been getting GREAT reviews for over a year. Some people were frustrated with it - you don't have a character who skates around, instead you just see your skateboard and move it around as if your fingers were feet. I think it's a lot of fun, but it's not for everyone. The graphics are beautiful 3D, and you can even listen to your own music while you play, if you want to! See Touchgrind on the iTunes app store
A scrolling simple skateboarding game. You guide your skater down the road, jumping off of wood and rail ramps, performing different tricks. You also have to avoid obstacles like speed bumps and open manholes. iSk8ter is a great fun and addicting game, good for kids and adults. Check out iSk8ter on the iTunes app store
Gameloft's addition to the skateboarding iPhone and iPod world is Skater Nation. Skater Nation is reminiscent of the old Tony Hawk videos games, with open areas full of obstacles, ramps and rails to skate on. You play in a place called Skanifornia, that contains 10 different locations. You can play as one of 8 different skaters, each one having his own attribute stats. The buttons and directional pad controls are on the screen, like a lot of iPhone games use - I don't like this kind of control in games on the iPhone, but it works OK. Check out the free version of Skater Nation
, and the paid version of Skater Nation
on the app store.
Vans Sk8: Pool Service
In Vans SK8: Pool Service you play as either Omar Hassan or Bucky Lasek. The game plays through 10 pool skateboarding events, or you can free ride and do whatever you want in the pool. You can customize your wheels and skateboard from 20 different real skateboard deck designs, like Element. The game controls use finger swipes and tilting the iPhone or iPod Touch. The game isn't very long, but for a couple of dollars it's certainly long enough. And, Vans has been releasing updates, and has more planned, so the game has good support!
