Vans AV Sk8 Low Skate Shoe Review

Vans AV Sk8 Low Skate Shoe Review

Vans Footwear

The Bottom Line

The AV Sk8-Low is the second pro signature model by Anthony Van Engelen. It uses a pretty solid and traditional design as its base (the Sk8-hi), and then AVE adjusted the shoe from there. The result is a strong traditional style Vans skateboarding shoe, but with a very low cut and Anthony Van Engelen's bold styling. This type of shoe isn't for everyone - take a look, and if you like what you see, you can rest assured that the design is strong.

Guide Review - Vans AV Sk8-Low Shoe Review - Anthony Van Engelen Pro Model

The Vans AV Sk8-Low is cut very deep - one of the lowest cut shoes I've worn. I usualy wear more mid-cut shoes, but I do like how free and flexible this low cut shoe felt. With the classic Vans light weight design, this low cut version is light and quick.

The side panels are built thick and tough - something you don't find in a lot of canvas skate shoes. The toe cap is made of thick, though suede and there's double stitching all around the shoe. The traditional waffle pattern gum sole is nice and grippy, as is the rubber wrap around the base that's double layered in the front. If you do a lot of flip tricks, you'll probably shred the laces a few times, and if you are very aggressive in your skateboarding I think you'd rip through the shoe eventually - but I've never seen a shoe that will last forever. I think the Vans AV Sk8-Low will last longer than most shoes that look like it, and I think you'll be happy with the fit, if you are into low cut skateboarding shoes.

The style is also pretty sweet - Anthony Van Engelen has a good sense for making cool shoes. The AV Sk8-Low comes in all kinds of color styles - mostly variations of checkers or plaid, with some paisley and a leopard print. There's even one that's all red with red and white checkers - it looks pretty bold. My pair are black with orange plaid side panels, and they caught a lot of attention. There's also an intricate emblem stitched into the heel that is gaudy and cool at the same time.

All of this considered, it's easy to recommend the Vans AV Sk8-Low shoe. It's strong style and low cut aren't for everyone though - take a look and see if you fall in love. If you like the fit and the look, you can trust the design. They're solid shoes.
