How does the Holoholo balance board work?
The top of the board has regular skateboard grip tape on it, so that your feet won't slip. There are also wooden blocks on the bottom of the board, set near each end. These keep the board from shooting out from under you as you rock from side to side.
There are several other balance boards that you can buy, but the one feature that sets Holoholo boards apart from the others is the "Pipe Lock" system. The blocks on the bottom of the board are set with adjustable screws. With these, you can set the pipe in the bottom of the board, and then you can practice balancing in a different way.

The roller has nice smoothed out rounded edges, and comes wrapped in a full color artistic graphic sticker that looks sweet! There are three different styles to choose from right now, and I'm sure there are more on the way.
The board also comes with "pipe locks". These finger adjustable screws are set into each end of the blocks on either end of the bottom of the board (these blocks keep the board from shooting out from under you). With these pipe locks, you can set the plastic roller pipe in sideways, and use the board in an entirely different way.

And for balance training, the Holoholo H1 that I used is great! When used in the regular way, with the roller free to roll from side to side, you get a good leg workout and you'll find your balance improving in only a few days.
The Pipe Lock is a great idea, and good for practicing things like kickturns. The roller does shift just a bit in the Pipe Locks, which I didn't like. But even so, it's a great idea! Personally, for kickturn practice I would recommend using a real skateboard. It's actually easier! But, with using the Holoholo you will get some extra balance practice, and it's pretty tough.
Holoholo - the final word
So far, the best balance board that I've ever used have been Indo Boards. Indo Boards use the exact same idea, where you have a board with stop blocks set on a roller. Indo Boards come in a variety of sizes, have a higher quality roller, and they use spray on grip so you can use them comfortably barefoot.
On the other hand, the Holoholo boards are designed more with skateboarders in mind. The H1 board that I tried out is roughly skateboard sized, and the use of skateboard griptape helps complete the feeling. Plus, with the ability to set the roller in the bottom of the board into the Pipe Locks, you can practice things like kickturns (and more).
I highly recommend the Holoholo balance boards, for skaters, surfers, snowboarders, wakeboarders - and for anyone else who wants better balance. They are fun to use, fun to watch friends try, and a great exercise tool. If you use a balance trainer like the Holoholo board, you will be a better skater. That's just the way it is. Try one out, and enjoy!
