These days downhill racing is becoming a big segment of the longboarding market, back in the day it was just a TV spectacle or a backmountain speed demon adrenalin fix. Easily one of the very first boards to be discover that served themselves well for speedboarding was the Comet Voodoo. This was one of the very first boards to be purpose specific, designed, and built for speedboarding. This companies start in 1998 was specifically aimed at making fast, light and stable boards. Of this the Voodoo was just one and this one will cost you 250$ for a complete.
Before we get into the boards specifics we have to mention the Comet near obsession with environmental responsibility. They have done everything they can to respect the earth and take only what is needed and leave only what is safe and healthy. Obviously in doing this the company has gone through many stages, almost vanishing a few times but always rising and dedicated to providing quality boards, and being responsible for everything they do “Cradle To Cradle”. All the while the Voodoo was out there bombing hills and being the absolute standard of speedboards. The Voodoo was released in 2002 much the same as it is today, only things that may have changed are materials as more ecologically safe techniques were discovered.
Currently the board is a maple sandwich with the veneers sandwiching biodegradable composites. These fully biodegradable materials are made from annually renewable resources, including soy proteins and natural fibers such as bamboo, jute, flax, hemp, and kenaf. They use a two-layer torsion box configuration similar to most snowboards, maximizing a e2e produced soy protein and bio-fiber cross-linking matrix. The custom profiled poplar core is a clear grain FSC-certified poplar sourced within 100 miles of their factory. They use poplar is used because of its strength to weight ratio. One of Comets ¼” Vertlam poplar cores weighs 11 ounces less than an equivalent maple core and five ounces less than bamboo. This layup is given a mix of rocker and concave with the footbase being given a perfect pocket to hold a riders feet. This board design has persisted for over 6 years as a quality speedboard, responsibility towards designing eco friendly boards has done nothing but improve the Voodoo.
The Voodoo is in the Top Ten because it is the most replicated, built off of, standard of size and quality that most conventional top mount speedboards are measured by. You can look at any company that is producing speedboards and in their lineup you will see the influence of the Voodoo either by direct compliment or unintended similarity. Back in 2002 they created the Voodoo and they hit on a perfect mix of deck elements to make the Voodoo the classic all time downhill top mount speedboard. I could go on for hours about all the eco friendly tree huggery that Comet participates in but I know that the legacy of responsibility towards our ecology that they are laying may get allot of press. The real impact that Comet has made though; has been and always will be the absolute perfection of performance in downhill skateboarding of the Voodoo.
The Voodoo is in the Top 10 Longboards EVER list.
