Skateboard Sporting Sail in Action

Skateboard Sporting Sails add a whole new dimension to downhill skateboarding. Picture something of a cross between a downhill longboarder and a flying squirrel, and you might have the right idea! This article is written by Billy Smith, one of the co-founders of the Sporting-Sails business - Steve Cave

Pioneer A Different Descent

The SPORTING-SAIL is the most reliable, efficient and easiest way to manage speed, increase stability and be seen for safety. With a deep history that spans across 75+ years of speed-skiing pioneers and family tradition, the sporting-sail has proven to work time and time again.

Weighing less than 8 ounces, the SPORTING-SAIL floats like a feather behind the rider during the entire descent and most enjoyed when deployed. The benefits of using a SPORTING-SAIL allows downhill riders to experience an ultimate sense of control on steeper, more challenging terrain with lighter, smaller, more responsive set-ups (not limited to longboards), while at the same time trains riders to examine overlooked carving scenarios in a stand-up position. Like climbers ascending mountains without ever dropping a knee, the SPORTING-SAIL inspires riders to descend mountains without ever dragging hands and feet on the street!

The Greenest Way to Get Down

Hand-sliding is effective and so is foot-braking; however, both are energy intensive, harmful for the environment and wasteful ways to cleanly "slow down." Deploying a SPORTING-SAIL is simple and eliminates the desire to destroy shoes, skin, decks, wheels, pads, pucks, clothing/denim and leather gloves/suits after each downhill "slide session." Inspired by Patagonia and 1% for the Planet's recreational/environmental/business practices, SPORTING-SAILS pledged to use only the highest quality eco-materials and transparent production processes available for its application. With a SPORTING-SAIL, its not how much you have, but how little you need!

How to Skate & Deploy

  1. Secure the lower straps snuggly around both legs (ankles, calves or thighs)
  2. Loop top straps over both hands (between thumb and forefinger)
  3. To increase air resistance, stability and visibility to traffic and others (stand tall and extend arms outward)
  4. To decrease air-resistance and increase speed (draw arms in towards chest and tuck)
  5. Be safe, responsible, experiment and have fun!
