Mega Ramp Action

Photo: Steve Cave
Of course, the big highlight at the end of the weekend was the Skateboarding Big Air Finals on the Mega Ramp. This was worth the sunburn I got watching it. These guys practiced for a good two or three hours before the event, and that was it. For all but Danny Way, this was the only time they had ridden a Mega Ramp since last year's X Games. The rumor is that Bob Burnquist is having the ramp moved to his house now, so that he and some of the other guys can practice. Bob is nuts. The highest drop in of the ramp is 70 feet in the air. Seventy feet. After jumping the 40 foot gap, they skate up the 30 foot quarter pipe at the end, and then fly usually at least that much again into the air...

This picture shows Andy Macdonald getting ready to drop in from the 70 footer, Danny Way coming off the launch, and Bucky Lasek (left) and Pierre-Luc Gagnon (right) launching off the quarter pipe.
