Hey. This is Bucky Lasek. How are you doing?
Pretty good. So how was your practice today?
Its still going on, we just had a little break.
About how much do you practice?
Well, it depends on how good we get it down. Sometimes we start at ten in the morning and it goes until eleven at night. I mean, breaks in between of course, but still. (sounds of dirt bikes in the background) Bob just scared the piss out of me!
Yeah?
He almost hit be with a bike. (we both laugh)
Nice! With being so busy, how does that work with having a family?
Well, I kind of dont have a family right now. Basically my wife runs the house and I make little phone calls in and send pictures while Im away.
Thats good that they support you in that.
Its good that I have T-Mobile as a sponsor!
(I laugh)
Let me put it that way.
So what do your kids think?
They love it, they love what daddy does.
They want to become pro boarders themselves?
Uh, my oldest, Devin, shes six and she wants to become a surfer, and, my little one, Paris, She uh, right now she just I dont know, she doesnt want to do anything right now.
Well yeah, shes kinda young.
A little too young to choose. She likes to ride on the back of the scooter, my Vespa.
So with all of this practicing and stuff, do you ever get burnt out?
Yeah, I think, uh, my wits very small right now.
Yeah, I bet.
I am uh, I had a really busy year, a great year, and I would love to be able to go home and relax with my family but thats not going to happen for another 2 months.
How much of a break do you get then?
And then I get to take a couple months off I think. Which, you know, usually doesnt involve like actually time off, Im still like doing stuff that I couldnt do while I was away, but at least Im home.
Youre having a good year so far! Good job last weekend! (Bucky had just won gold at the 2003 Gravity Games the weekend before this interview)
Yeah I am, thank you.
Hows that feel?
It feels better the older you get, Ill tell you that!
Youve been competing since you were 14 or so, right?
Right.
So, what did your parents think, of you becoming a skateboarder?
They were like, you know, you arent going to do this all of your life, the typical thing, you better, you know, like make big plans. What are you gonna do when youre done? 19 years later (we both laugh)
