Merry Christmas!!

It's Christmas! If you're like me, your family is insane and you are looking for something to distract you. Or maybe everything's great, but you're too full of food and joy to do anything but surf the web...

Either way, here are some great ways to distract you:

The best idea I have is to check out the Top 5 Free Online Skateboarding Games. There are some fun options here - have fun, check out and relax!
Or maybe you want to hurt yourself by checking out the Worst 10 Online Skateboarding Games. There are some real stinkers in here. Enjoy ... ?
If you're a thinker, and actually want to learn something, I've got some fun stuff in the History of Skateboarding section.
But maybe that's a little too much reading for some of you. Maybe checking out pictures is more your style - if so, take a look at the Pro Skater Photo Galleries.
Or you can just go out and skate, if you live somewhere like Oregon, where we had the sunniest Christmas I can remember!

No matter what you do, I hope you get to hang with some people who love you, and that you get some good loot.

Last Minute Skateboard Gift Idea - Tech Deck Toys

Wander into any big store's toy section, and you can find an area devoted to Tech Decks. These are little toy skateboards that have real skate company brands and graphics on them. A few years back, I tore my ACL (that's in your knee, and it sucks to have to tear), and a girl bought me a Habitat tech deck board to play with, since I couldn't skate for several months. It was one of the coolest gifts I'd ever been given!

When people are really good at Tech Deck, they can do all kinds of finger tricks with their Teck Deck skateboards. You can also use very small skate tools that come with some of the sets to take your board apart, swap parts, and even tighten or loosen the trucks.

For the toy side of it, you can get all kinds of Teck Deck related stuff like figures to put on the boards, small plastic skateparks, and all kinds of other stuff.

So if your skater is a kid, some of these toys might make great gifts. And if you skater is a big kid (say, 13 to 35), getting him or her a Tech Deck board from a brand that they like is a great, small, simple gift. With Christmas right around the corner, I got to thinking about all the people rushing frantically to find the right gift, or ANY gift, for their skater kid, spouse or significant other.� I've already made some lists with skater gift ideas, and asked you to post what YOU would want, but what about what you DON'T want? Check out my list of the Top WORST Skateboarder Gifts, and see what you think!

Also, post a comment below with your own ideas of what you think people should avoid giving skaters.� If you are a skater, I'm SURE you have some ideas of what would make a lame gift!

Top 10 gifts for adult skateboarders

Shopping for adult skaters can be tricky. They probably already have a board, and have a fairly good idea of what they like. So, the basic Top 10 skater gifts list might not work for them. So, I've cooked up the new and improved Top 10 gifts for adult skateboarders list to help out. There are some interesting things in the list, like the shelf seen pictured here. There are also books, videos, games - all kinds of stuff to pick from. Take a look and get some ideas!

Bridge to Skate - Helping Kids and Communities

Bridge to Skate is a "humanitarian organization that uses skateboarding and play to aid in the creation of life skills, promotion of health, fostering of peace, and the education of cultural differences internationally." At least that's how they define themselves on the Bridge to Skate website!

They help build skateparks in depressed areas, give out skateboards, pads and shoes, and try and help out communities. They're like a non-religious skateboarding missions organization! They are building a school in Honduras, and provide skateboarding scholarships.

If this sounds like something you would like to get involved in, you can donate money, sponsor skaters, and / or help by volunteering time! Email them at info@bridgetoskate.org for more info.

You can also e-mail them if you want to be sponsored, or if you would like to get help getting a skatepark built in your town. Remember that they focus on kids and communities that really need help, so don't be disappointed if they can't help you right away - but this is what they are here to do, and it never hurts to ask!!

Xtreme Sports Insurance - Hit the Skatepark with Confidence

I came across XSI, and thought that there's a great chance someone reading this would be interested! Xtreme Sports Insurance (XSI) is a company that offers "accident insurance". They insist it's very different from "health insurance" - this insurance is designed for people who risk getting hurt a lot (so, skateboarders would fit the bill). When you do get hurt, doing anything at all - it doesn't have to be skateboarding - you send them a copy of the doctor bill and they send you money. They don't send the money to the doctor, they send it to you. So, in theory, you could use this along with other insurance, just to help defray costs. And, every time you got hurt, you would have the wierd little bonus of knowing you're going to get some money!

Looking at the XSI website, I'm really not sure how much money you would get. They say they have plans starting at $17.30 a month. This honestly looks like a great deal to me. A week and a half ago, I took a softball to the eye. I know, what's a skater doing playing softball? Well, I obviously wasn't playing very well - I got hit in the eye! Anyway, I have a small broken bone and 8 stitches. If I read their payout plans right, on the $17.30 a month plan I would have received $150 for hurting my eye, $75 for the gash that needed stitches, and I think $750 because I have a small busted bone in my face. Wow. Even though it had nothing at all to do with skateboarding! That sure would have been nice...

But before I head out and sing the praises of this company too much, I'd like to open this up to hear from anyone who might have used XSI, or anything like it. If you know anything about this company, or companies like this, please leave a comment below! I've never actually used XSI, and I don't want to tell people to use it if it's a scam!

What's Your Skateboard Setup?

Does this post sound familiar? I wrote it a month ago - it's like a re-run! I was part of a test team for About.com, to make this new kind of "Reader Stories" feature, and now it's become a full fledged part of About.com, so I'm running this again!

Your "Setup" is all of the pieces and parts that go into your skateboard. It's pretty rare to find two skaters with the same setup, and hearing about what other skaters use, and why, is a great way to learn about new options, and pick fights.

So what's your skateboard setup? I've got a new page where you can describe your setup, and even post a couple of pictures if you want to! Check out Reader Stories: Skateboard Setups. I already posted my setup there, but my current setup is kinda boring - just a minilogo deck with blank wheels! But I like it ... it's weird what we end up feeling comfortable with. I rode an old used beat up blank deck for years! I'm sure your setup is more exciting than mine - go post about it, and see what other skaters are riding! And if you have more than one skateboard in your quiver, sweet - tell us about 'em all!
