Skateboard 101: Part 3 - Skateboard Stance

In Skateboard 101 Part 2, we talked about skateboard style. Now I want to hit something I get a LOT of email about, and that gets you actually onto your board - your skateboard stance.

I remember back when I first started skating, one of the biggest questions I wrestled with was, which skateboarding stance am I?! Looking back it seems funny - I didn't worry so much about how to push, I was worried that somehow I had the "wrong" skateboard stance, and that this would mess up my skateboarding from here on out.

For all of you new skaters out there, don't worry about it! Relax! Picking your skateboarding stance is easy, and to be honest, you can't go "wrong". But there's probably one way that will be more natural for you. I'll start from there beginning (since this IS skate 101):

The two different ways to stand on your skateboard are - Goofy (skating with your right foot forward) and Regular (skating with your left foot forward). Here's one tricky way to figure out which stance you are. Go get a ball or something like that, and sit it on the ground in front of you. Now kick it. Whichever foot you kicked it with will likely be your back foot. You want the balancing foot in the front, and the kicking foot in the back.

Hey,I just wanted to say that while those little tricks to find out your stance are good,they don’t always work.I had been skating GOOFY for about two years,and each one I did said I should be a regular rider.I can skate regular,but goofy is so much more comfortable.So if you do do these tricks,and your stance doesn’t feel quite right,try switching your stance.You might be surprised.

just walk back, and jump on your board. look at your feet. that’s your stance.

this works best if you dont know its coming, so if you’re teaching someone else for example: another trick is to stand there. have someone push you from behind, and the foot you catch yourself with is the foot that goes in front!

Well, a good key to realize your stance is try to slide, with both feet on a sliding floor (at home using talc foot powder could work), do it naturally, do not think of which foot goes first. I know it could be risky, just keep your weight centered. It could help you to find your own stance.

hiya i think the gofy stand is way more comfterbule and i can do tricks so much easyer, it just feels better. btw if you dont get the hand of it after the first few weeks youv’e go to keet trying.GOOFY ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
