Lets talk about helmets
Helmets are a strangely touchy, loaded topic in skateboarding! For some people, it's just a simple personal choice. But for other people, it's a crusade to get every skater to wear one, or a crusade to fight the authorities who are trying to force helmets on us all. See how it can get crazy so fast? But the question still comes up, and I get a lot of e-mails about it - should skaters wear helmets? Now, I shy away from questions like that ... I don't like to tell people they should do one thing or another. But with helmets, I don't mind pushing a little. In my opinion, they are a good idea! Read the new skate FAQ "Do I Need to Wear a Skateboard Helmet?" for more info. It's got a couple of horror stories.
I've also got a new place for you to share your own stories for how helmets have saved your brain - read Readers Respond: How Has a Helmet Saved Your Life, or Close To It? Be the first to share your story, or check out what other people say!

We’re all only one head bonk away from having to wear diapers the rest of your life—I’ll opt for the helmet, thanks.
I did not wear a helmet when I was young or late Sixty’s and early Seventy’s. But, I wear it today at the age of 56. Neither helmet nor knee/elbow pad looked cool in those days. I think I was lucky to have no serious injury. Now, I have to protect myself to keep on surfing and skating as long as I can.

I wanted to comment under ‘The Best Helmets to Buy’ list but couldn’t find the option. Just wanted to mention that very often Downhill Skaters are interested in lightweight full-face protection with a wide field of view.
The ‘Charly – No Limit’ paragliding helmet has become very popular among the very elite of the sport. Other more affordable options include 661’s ‘Comp II’ a full-face designed for BMX and downhill bicycling. I have one on order and would be happy to offer a review after a fair bit of use.
