Skateboarding - live wrecker or life saver?

Thursday September 18, 2008
Skateboarding has a weird image. Apparently, skateboarding has single-handedly destroyed the lives of thousands. But you and I both know that's no where near true. SkateboardERS might sometimes be jerks or punks and throw their lives away, but skateboardING is a purely positive thing. skateboarding can teach the skater a lot, and if you've skated for long, you know what I'm talking about. I have my own reasons that I think skateboarding is a hugely positive experience, but share yours by leaving a comment below!

COMPLETE Skate LogoBut I got totally side tracked there from what I wanted to talk about! With the rough image that skateboarding has acquired, I love it when I hear about groups like COMPLETE Skate. COMPLETE Skate is an organization out of Portland Oregon that uses skateboarding to encourage kids who are having trouble in school. The program has two parts - a 24 week long after school program where kids get mentored, and a schoolday program.

Sound like a cool program? I think it's a brilliant idea. They've been around for four years, and now they could use some help. If you want to donate money or gear, or better yet if you want to donate time, contact them! You can also talk to them about getting their program in your school!

Skateboarding taught me all I know about hard work, dedication, perseverance and self-motivation. It is an integral part of who I am today and the work ethic I bring with me. That said, I appreciate the people who think it is a “bad influence.” It helps keep skateboarding cool, and everyone likes to be cool. If they don’t understand now, they will be forced to understand when they find that punk little skateboarder is now their boss. VIVA LA PATINADORES!

Skateboarding has taught me alot about myself. It has shown me that if i dedicate myself to something I can actually make it. Its also given me some of the best experinces of my life. I’ve met alot of cool friends, even my boyfriend, and i’ve gotten to travel to skateparks, and even go watch compations. I dont see why people think that it is a bad influence, but theres nothing we can do about the way that people think. What we can do is keep skating, and do what we like, and let the haters think what they want to think.

Skateboarding is fun. Life is difficult. Somewhere in the middle are all the complications that make up who we are, but the reason why we do it is actually pretty simple.

Skateboarding at its purest is all about balance and getting up when you fall down.
