A new champion dominates Women's Skateboard Vert

Saturday August 2, 2008
Karen Jones has been doing well in women's skateboard for the last few years, but she hasn't been standing out until this year. At the international X Games in Brazil, she decided to compete in the Men's division, and took 18th. It was impressive.

Today she took that spirit one step further and launched herself into the spotlight by winning gold. "This is the first time I've won anything, ever. I'm so, so happy," said Jones. "In practice Mimi and Lyn-Z were killing it so I knew I would have to land every trick to beat them."

Lyn-Z Hawkins, last year's gold medalist, won silver this year, and Mimi Knoop, who won last year's silver, was pushed back to bronze.

"The girls were skating at an all time high for vert ladies," said Mimi Knoop. "The air felt different this year. It was way more competitive. The fire was lit. It was good just to get on the podium with that pool of girls."
