No Olympic Skateboarding

Friday September 21, 2007
There has been a lot of debate in the skateboarding world about whether or not skateboarding should be added to the Olympic roster. According to some, it was only a matter of time. According to others, that first group is full of lying jerks who only want money. And then there was another group that just wanted to skate and not worry about it, while yet another group got distracted and forgot why they were there.

But, the bottom line is, No Skateboarding in the London Olympics. It's done. According to Clarkie, author of Real Skate online skateboarding magazine, it's been decided that there will be no skateboarding in the 2012 games. Clarkie's been pushing for this for a while, so she's pretty pleased - read all about it. And, she's right on many points - especially that if skateboarding is going to be in the Olympics, it needs to be done right. This same story has been repeated on the Transworld Skateboarding website.

Now, this is the current story, but not necessarily the whole story. Check out the IASC website. Leave a comment below and share what you think!

A sad day.

I would love to know what “Clarkie” thinks is the “right” way.

I just have to laugh at this group of people who think skateboarding is still core, and somehow needs to be protected from the masses. WAKE UP…there is nothing core about skateboarding anymore. Heck skateboarding is older than I am, and I’m 50.

By the way, I’m still looking for that person, who’s personal enjoyment of snowboarding has been diminished because of snowboarding’s inclusion in the Olympics.

I’m not sure why you are taking what ‘Clarkie’ says as fact anyway. Read the article she posted. No where does it say that skateboarding has been pulled? No where.

Besides, the site she references, Around The Rings, isn’t even an official Olympics website.

“Plans to bring skateboarding to the program for the 2012 Olympics are headed for a crash landing, sources tell Around The Rings..”

Does that sounds like fact? Clarkie is a kook and it’s amazing that ‘About.com’ would post this as fact from a LAME skateboard “news” source…

You need to get your facts straight before posting.

andy cant kickflip, that much is clear. he is a poseur. he is probably retarded as well. And no, you dont make more money than all the people reading this. not only that, your justification for skating appears to be all the money and chicks. once again, you are a poseur, and do not deserve the joys skateboarding brings.

skateboarding has been in the mainstream since about 94, and was large through most of the 80s. if skateboarding being in the olypics would keep you from skating, then stop now, poseur. who gives a damn.

all i know is i like to see good skaters do sick tricks at every chance I get. i really could care less if it is in the olympics, the X games, a skate video, at the skate park or on the street. i enjoy skating for skating’s sake, and everything else is immaterial.

This article hits the nail on the head when it says that skateboarding in the olympics would have to be “done right”. I can’t think of a perfect way to reconcile the diversity, range and styles of skateboarding with the olympic judging format. What would the events be? Would it be an x-games type of competition? Could pros enter? Would Danny Way get booted for steriods? It would most likely be a partial representation of our favorite sport, but right or wrong, I’d totally watch it.

If anyone ever doubts the integrity of my reporting, feel free to verify my sources. In this case the IOC. Contact them and get the story yourself if you are that angry. You must be on of Gary’s group who got an entirely different story. Or is it just more fun to call someone a kook.
