"A Christian Skateboard Emporium"

Friday July 20, 2007
The Kansas City Star recently ran an article about a huge church with a massive skate park in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. "Several times each week, Frallicciardi, 32, ministers the Gospel to hundreds of Tony Hawk wannabes at Ramp 48+, a Christian skateboard emporium that's part of Calvary Chapel in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., bristling with ramps, stairs, half-pipes and grind rails." Read the rest of the article on the Kansas City Star website. The article talks about how groups like this aren't all that rare. "More than 200 skate ministries have popped up across the globe, including Sk8 4 God in California, King of Kings Skate Ministry in Arizona, and Saved Skaters in upstate New York. The movement has spurred an industry of specialty Christian skateboards and inspired a flurry of Web sites and YouTube videos." (Star)

Skateboarding has always been full of people with strong beliefs. Some groups use skateboarding to promote environmental awareness, with pros like Bob Burnquist leading the charge. Shaun White is on a TV add currently that talks about celebrities changing the world. And in my interview with Jereme Rogers, he explained that he believes God gave him skating talent so that when people looked at him, he could point them back to Jesus.

What do you think? Are you involved with any kind of skateboarding-with-a-purpose groups or organizations? How do you feel about them? Leave a comment below!

Everything is left behind when you skate, age, race, creed blah blah blah kumbiyah blah blah, only the stoke is important. That’s why I love skating, and almost see it as a religion as long as you pay your dues you’re welome, (ie repent your sins and start again, or pick yourself up, walk the pain off, and try again) and both religion and skating have the same added bonus of leading a lifestyle that lends itself to self improvement. I’m an atheist and I’ll skate with anyone anywhere as long as your feeling the stoke. Once again kumbiyah.
