Musique Concrete: Transforming Space, Sound, and the City Through Skateboarding
This is definitely something new - a guy named Simon Morris has come up with a small electronic device that he attached to the bottom of his skateboard. This device creates sounds interpreted from the skateboard's movements. Not music exactly, but sounds. In a short interview, Simon said, "These are sounds interpreted from living and skating in an urban environment. I grew up in New York where sounds had a large influence on my perception of the city. Skateboarding sounds are very distinct from actual music (in the sense of a song or tune)The idea was not to replicate skateboarding sounds, (that would be pretty boring). Instead, my goal was to explore the idea of sound as relating to skateboarding. I wouldn't call it 'skateboard music' it is more an investigation of the musicality of skateboarding. in my experience it is best keeping these sounds in their abstract form. They can be modified according to the skate moves and tricks you make. Therefore each skateboarder composes their own unique composition."
Find out more about this at Simon's website, therealsimon.com. In his Videos section, you can see his boards being ridden, and the sounds they produce. It's pretty unique!
