Dogtown Dad Teaches Son to Skate
Thursday October 26, 2006
Cookie Magazine has a great story by Duncan Bock, a man who grew up in Dogtown, and who now, after 17 years, is getting back into skateboarding with his 8 year old son. The author writes, "As he pulls on his kneepads, my son seems oblivious and carefree. He'll drop into this massive structure for the first time today, and it occurs to me that this is literally child's play to him. Henry doesn't have the whole backstory that's running in my head: How hard it used to be to find empty backyard pools in Los Angeles or scavenge wood from construction sites to build ramps. How I used to peer through a hole in a fence to watch Jay Adams skate a backyard half-pipe, or how my single aspiration in life, as I claimed in my sixth-grade yearbook, was to become a pro skater."
